Winner of Competition Receives Smart Airway Manikin
Stephen Gibbons, winner of our Smart Airway competition, welcomed the prize trainer to the London Ambulance Service.

This week, we paid a visit to London Ambulance Service to deliver a Smart Airway task trainer to Paramedic Clinical Team Manager, Stephen Gibbons. Steve won the Smart Airway in a competition hosted at Limbs & Things HQ in Bristol earlier this year, so our colleague Michael stopped by to hand deliver it.
Smart Airway is an airway management training manikin that provides live feedback to improve procedural technique, allows self-directed assessment, and recording of task attempts that can be submitted to an assessor.
Steve and his colleagues got to test out Smart Airway to get hands-on with its features and understand how they can use it in their training.
Steve said, ‘The immediate positives are that it allows recording and reviewing of attempts, while providing feedback for improvement. It covers off airway management that you wouldn’t get from other manikins.
It will be good for use in our assessment centres because it allows for self-assessment and for recordings to be sent on to the trainer for review.
It will also allow us to practice even if you’re not using it to learn. As paramedics we need to perform at least two intubations a month to recertify our intubation status, and we can do this via simulation.’

We’re pleased to see how Smart Airway will contribute to both training and ongoing professional development for London Ambulance Service. It provides a great tool for teaching the basics to new starters and refreshing the knowledge of experienced team members.
