DESIGN ENGINEER

The role aims to develop L&T products from early prototypes to their final production version via collaboration with the Project Lead. As part of the project team, you will liaise with OPS/ENG and PM Teams to deliver the project deliverables through the NPD phases. Working with Eng. to facilitate a smooth and accurate Tooling/Handover phase, follow all L&T procedures and update these when needed. Update and maintain all relevant documents and databases.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver high-quality engineering designs from concept through to production release.
  • Produce accurate 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Take technical ownership of assigned components, sub-assemblies, or projects, including BoM updates.
  • Ensure designs meet functional, manufacturing, quality, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Apply sound engineering analysis and calculations to validate designs.
  • Support, and on occasion lead, prototype builds, testing, and design verification activities.
  • Work closely with manufacturing, suppliers, and cross-functional teams to resolve technical issues.
  • Identify and implement design improvements and cost reduction opportunities.
  • Manage design and engineering changes and maintain revision control.
  • Deliver tasks to agreed timescales, quality standards, and project plans.
  • Support continuous improvement of engineering processes and standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers as required.
  • Follows L&T’s QMS Procedures and Work Instructions.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum of 4 years of professional work experience in product development or R&D.
  • Strong grounding in mechanical engineering principles, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  •  Proficient in SolidWorks 3D CAD (inc. surface modelling) and 2D drawing creation to relevant standards.
  • Experience with tolerance analysis and design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA).
  • Practical knowledge of common manufacturing methods, including machining, sheet metal, and injection moulding
  • Experience delivering prototypes, testing, and design verification activities.
  • Ability to apply engineering calculations and structured problem-solving techniques.
  • Experience working with suppliers and cross-functional teams to resolve technical issues.
  • Understanding of engineering change control, quality systems, and relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of RTV silicones and PU foams would be beneficial.
  • Experience with Arduino programming and or mechatronics would be beneficial.
