Tooling Design Engineer

THE JOB

The Tooling Design Engineer specialises in creating tooling solutions for Silicone and PU foam moulding as well as Jigs & Fixtures for new and existing production needs. The Tooling Design Engineer is responsible for the development of Tooling Design Solutions to support various

processing techniques. They will be responsible for taking part designs from R&D and delivering final production tooling designs to allow volume component manufacture. They will also be responsible for redesign of existing production tooling, revamping tooling standards to reduce production costs, labour time and scrap whilst also researching new tooling concepts.

  • The Tooling Design Engineer is responsible for every detail of the tooling design and development process. This is central to Continuous Improvement initiatives.
  • The role holder is responsible for the design, creation, execution, and maintenance of L&T’s tools, jigs and fixtures.
  • They will produce and maintain the CAD for tooling and jigs used by L&T.
  • Responsibility for validating designs through prototyping and simulation which includes Mould flow analysis, and problem-solving tool/jig design issues when identified.
  • Building justifications for tooling expenditure including KPI’s, payback periods for new tools and ensuring delivered tools meet these targets.
  • Project scheduling is an essential part of the role so that trials of new tools and processes are carried out to agreed timelines to ensure projects are completed on time.
  • Collaborating with production, quality, and design personnel in development teams, to evaluate and validate products after design changes.
  • Assisting other Engineers with tooling and other Engineering issues.
  • Working with the management team to develop standards for new product development as well as specifying and overseeing sub-contract tooling design and manufacture where required.
  • Evaluating customer issues and examining Technical Drawings and Documentation to resolve design issues.
  • Ensuring new tools are recorded on ERP systems and old tools are disposed off and removed from the system and production.
  • Creation of Production Work Instructions for new tools and ensuring Operators are trained to work instructions.
  • Supporting the Engineering workshop in commissioning new tools and the maintenance of existing tools

  • At least 3 years’ experience working in injection moulding tool design or similar.
  • Engineering Degree or a recognised Engineering Apprenticeship.
  • Good working knowledge of injection moulding processes
  • Experience using 3D modelling ideally SolidWorks and producing production documentation including technical drawings and process control documents
  • Prior experience with mould flow analysis
  • In depth knowledge of manufacturing techniques used to produce injection tooling
  • Experience working with tool makers in the UK and overseas
  • Broad understanding of small to large-scale production and manufacturing.
  • Experience of performing engineering calculations by hand or using FEA
  • Involvement or Knowledge of Continuous Improvement (Six Sigma or Lean) would be helpful.
  • A good understanding of Lean Manufacturing and ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems
  • Experience of using SolidWorks Vault (PDM) would be an advantage although not essential.
  • Knowledge of RTV silicon would be beneficial but not essential, training will be provided
  • Strong project / program management abilities in order to deliver tools to schedule.
  • A working knowledge of ERP systems.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office suite skills
  • Solid analytical abilities.
  • Creative and progressive thinking is an essential.
  • A practical, can-do attitude.
  • Excellent communication and teamworking skills.
