Chest Drain & Needle Decompression Trainer
As used on ATLS V10 courses, the Chest Drain and Needle Decompression trainer is the ideal simulator to deliver training in both surgical and guide-wire assisted thoracostomy and thoracentesis. The model is suitable for teaching chest tube insertions (including the Seldinger technique through its ultrasound capability), chest drainage, and needle decompression techniques, which are taught in both foundation and advanced training curriculum.

Anatomy

Skills Gained
- Needle decompression of a tension pneumothorax (at both the 2nd and 5th intercostal space)
- Open, or cut-down chest drain insertion: recognition of correct position, surgical incision, blunt dissection through chest wall, perforation of pleura and finger sweep
- Suture of tube to chest wall
- Ultrasound-guided chest drain insertion (Seldinger-type), including insertion of needle under direct vision and ultrasonic recognition of chest structures
